Sydney is Australia's most populous city, and has a transit system dominated by 2 government operators; CityRail, the metropolitan rail service operator which operates all Sydney Suburban, Newcastle Suburban, and Interurban runs from Sydney to Nowra, Goulburn, Lithgow, Muswellbrook and Dungog. CityRail is a division of the Rail Corporation of New South Wales. The other division, CountryLink, operates the New South Wales rural & east coast inter-capital passenger rail service.
The suburban bus services are operated by the State Transit Authority of New South Wales. They also have a much smaller operation in Newcastle, 160 KM's to the north. In 2004, the STA ceased operating resonsibilities of ferry services which tranferred to the new Sydney Ferries Corporation.
Sydney also has a large number of Private Bus & Ferry Operators which operate mostly in outer suburban areas providing routes from those areas to railway stations and shopping centres. Services on these routes are generally poorer than the STA operated routes and patronage is generally quite low as a result of this, and the routes being poorly advertised in the first place.
The Sydney Monorail and Sydney Light Rail are operated on a contractual arrangement with the French CGEA Connex group, which is also one of the larger outer suburban private operators. The monorail operates primarily as a tourist operation, whilst the light rail is hindered from being a serious contribution to the transit system by being denied permission and funding to construct an extenstion from Central Station to Circular Quay. Until this happens, patronage is expected to remain low.
