Singapore

The city state island of Singapore is about 1 kilometre south of Malaysia (and mainland Asia) and is connected by the famous Causeway. The tiny nation of just over 700 Metres has as a result one of the highest rates of urban areas in the world. The public transit operation in Singapore serves the island extensively with a reliable, clean and cheap service. The back-bone of the system is the (currently) 3 line Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system. Service is provided by 2 major operators:

The first stage of the MRT opened between Toa Payoh & Yio Chu Kang on the North-South line in 1987. The newest, the North-East line MRT is the first in Singapore to be totally underground and fully automated. All underground stations on all lines are equipped with platform edge doors allowing fully air-conditioned stations. A welcome comfort given Singapore's tropical climate.

SBS Transit is also the operator of a large number of Double-Deck buses, mostly of Volvo and older Leyland makes, but also Dennis. Singapore's network has an EZ Link contactless smart card system in place for fare collection.
