Geneva, Switzerland

Situated at the point where the lake of the same name becomes the Rhone River, and surrounded by the French alps, Geneva is the largest French speaking city in Switzerland. Home to many well known international organisations, it is also home to one of the best networks of street transporation in Western Europe.

The agency that combines all public transport in the Canton of Geneva and the surrounding area's in France is Unireso. This organisation co-ordinates public transport services from the Swiss Federal Railway's SBB/CFF/FFS, Swissboat (for Lake Geneva ferries), TPN (the provider in the neighbouring city of Nyon) and Transports Publics Genevois - The operator of all street transport in Greater Geneva. The photographs on this page focus mainly on the operatations of TPG.

3 tram (13, 15 & 16) and 6 trolleybus (2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 19) routes provide the core network of service with a fleet of diesels operating the cross-suburban and busier non-electrified routes. For some of these, there are plans to replace them (such as Route 29 to Meyrin) with extenstions from the tram network. Details of these and other projects for Geneva can be found at the Urban Transport Technology website.

Services are always well patronised, and as a result the majority of vehicles are articulated. All tickets must be purchased off-vehicle, which drastically increases service reliability in comparison with other cities that still allow on board sales. TPG have also recently been experimenting with double-articulated vehicles due to overcrowding on many of the trolleybus routes, particularly route 10 to the Airport (see bus 721 pictured below). SBB/CFF/FFS operate a small network of suburban services in the area, some running into France together with the Inter-City services to places further afield such as Lausanne, Zurich, and Bern, the nation's capital.

Geneva should be included as part of an enthusiasts visit to Switzerland.
