Edmonton, Alberta

Edmonton is the capital city of the Canadian Province of Alberta. Situated in the centre of the province, roughly 300 klms east of the Rocky Mountains and just north of the 50 degree latitude, the city experiences harsh winters. Transit service that is provided by the Edmonton Transit System is comprised of Canada's second and smaller remaining Trolleybus system, a single LRT line and a network of other diesel and CNG powered buses. The harsh winters are one factor in the longevity of Edmonton's Trolleybuses as there is no need with electric vehicles to keep an engine running 24hrs a day avoid oil/fuel freezing in the -20C and lower temperatures.

The Edmonton trolleybuses are rather unusual vehicles. The traction equipment is by BBC (Brown Boveri Corporation, which became ABB, then ADTranz and now part of Bombardier) & similar to that used in the Wellington Volvo Trolley's, while the body style is that of a GM NewLook diesel bus.

The LRT runs between Clareview in the North Eastern suburbs, through the downtown section then across the North Saskatchewan River to terminate at the first station on the new southern extension, Health Sciences Stn. It differs to Calgary's C-Train in that the downtown section is underground rather than at street level. Also, the section from downtown to Clareview until recently shared the Canadian National right-of-way into downtown Edmonton. The CN branch line into downtown Edmonton now no longer exists and the VIA Rail Station has been relocated on the CN Northern bypass in the northern suburbs of Edmonton. VIA's "Canadian" services Edmonton 3 times weekly in either direction from Toronto to Vancouver.

The LRT has proposals to be extended further south. Details of this may be found at the Edmonton SLRT project webpage. Please also take the time to visit the Edmonton Trolley Coalition, a group of Edmontonians and others who are doing their very best to help keep Trolleybuses running in the City of Edmonton. Several members of the City Council have made it clear that they wish their city to be wire free and more polluted by getting rid of the Trolleys. The author of this site extends to them the very best of luck and wishes in their campaign to save their network for future generations.
