Brisbane, Queensland



Brisbane is the State Capital of Queensland, the 3rd larest Australian State by population. While having the potential to have a great transport system, it suffers greatly because the two operators are from two different levels government. Suburban Trains are operated by the state owned Queensland Railways, while suburban buses are run by the Brisbane City Council. A situation in Australia that is unique to Brisbane, and in which a lot of petty squabbling has taken place over the years...even when the Council & State Government are powered by the same political parties! Recently, greater efforts have been made to get the two operators working closer together.

The railway system has been electrified for only just over 20 years, the first section opened November 17th, 1979 between Ferny Grove & Darra. The rest of the system took another 9 years to complete, when on February 6th, 1988 part of the Pinkenba Line was electrified. The BCC bus network is extensive and has recently had a well overdue network redesign. Recently the Queensland State Government has co-ordinated fares across all public transit operators in the South-eastern part of the state. Borrowing the name of the British Columbia operator, Translink is the umberella for the co-ordination of public transit and fares. Essentially a resurrection of the former Metropolitan Transit Authority , it has achieved a great deal in a short time and is to be commended for its fare structure that combines QR Suburban & InterUrban rail, BCC bus & ferry and private bus in the South Eastern Queensland region.

The South-east busway and the Inner-northern busways have opened, and while not like the guided 'O-Bahn' in Adelaide, still speeds up travel times signficantly in this corridor which is remote from railways.
