The railway system has been electrified for only just over 20 years, the first section opened November 17th, 1979 between Ferny Grove & Darra. The rest of the system took another 9 years to complete, when on February 6th, 1988 part of the Pinkenba Line was electrified. The BCC bus network is extensive and has recently had a well overdue network redesign. Recently the Queensland State Government has co-ordinated fares across all public transit operators in the South-eastern part of the state. Borrowing the name of the British Columbia operator, Translink is the umberella for the co-ordination of public transit and fares. Essentially a resurrection of the former Metropolitan Transit Authority , it has achieved a great deal in a short time and is to be commended for its fare structure that combines QR Suburban & InterUrban rail, BCC bus & ferry and private bus in the South Eastern Queensland region.
The South-east busway and the Inner-northern busways have opened, and while not like the guided 'O-Bahn' in Adelaide,
still speeds up travel times signficantly in this corridor which is remote from railways.
